Wonder Women of Country (from the EP Willis, Carper, Leigh available on Bismeaux Records) (by Danny McCloskey)
Kelly Willis, Melissa Carper, and Brennen Leigh scratch their names on the title for the recent EP. Trading in capes for capos the trio deliver a debut EP as the Wonder Women of Country with the recent release Willis, Carper, Leigh. The love of Classic Country brought them together, Melissa Carper recalling ‘Brennen and I got together back in 2019 to write a song about our love for old Country music. When we first met each other, in 2009, we realized we shared a lot of the same influences such as Jimmie Rodgers, Hank Williams and the Carter Family. I think we both tend to think that the old county music is still the best music in existence and what we prefer to listen to just any time but especially when going through hard times’. The recording features songs written by the three players as well as John Prine’s “I Have Met My Love Today”. An ocean breeze drifts over EP opener “Fly Ya to Hawaii” as stuttering strings back “Hanging on to You” and a tender melody wraps around the barroom tale in “Another Broken Heart”. Wonder Women of Country keep a torch burning for the warm sounds of Classic Country as they count “A Thousand Ways” to grab some love and claim “Won’t Be Worried Long” as they spin a Loretta Lynn record to bring a smile.
