Ward Hayden & The Outliers (from the album South Shore available on Faster Horses Recordings) (by Bryant Liggett)
Ward Hayden packs a lot into one package. The band that was Girls, Guns, and Glory (ditching the name in 2019 in anticipation a world urging sensitivity to the words we use) to become Ward Hayden & The Outliers, keeping the former moniker’s brand of Roots Rock, twangy Pop, and Classic Country, those sounds presented equally on their latest in South Shore. The different name has not resulted in different musical approach, as its all still Top Shelf great. Ward Hayden opens South Shore with the statement of ‘ever, yone’s angry, everyone’s mad’ before letting us into his past and present approach on songwriting; he lets us know in “Write a Song” that it’s all observation. It’s an opener both catchy and sincere. Ward Hayden & The Outliers put a Rootsy twist on a classic lullaby in “Hush” present a Springsteen-vibe lyrically and musically for the title track, and drop the traintrack beat Country rhythm, as well as a big yodel, in “Blink of an Eye”. Ward Hayden speaks for everyone that has wanted to bust from home while still keeping a foot in the stomping grounds in “(Breaking up with) My Hometown” and offers a picturesque, funny ballad in the closer of “The Great Unknown”. ‘Try to be thankful, don’t be an a**hole’ is one of many keeper-lines in the cut.
