Victoria Liedtke & Jason Ringenberg (from the album More Than Words Can Tell available on Judee Bop Records) (by Lee Zimmerman)
Jason Ringenberg’s resume is well known. One time leader of the pioneering Alt Country combo Jason and the Scorchers, he’s since carved out a successful solo career that even includes occasional veers into children’s music. For her part, Victoria Liedtke has toured throughout the UK, Europe, and Japan and has taken part in various projects, including the group Hey! Hello!, which was nominated as Best New Band at the Classic Rock Awards in 2013. Despite their disparate backgrounds, the two make a perfect pairing while taking on the roles of Dolly Parton and Porter Wagoner for their new duet album, More Than Words Can Tell. Singing in sync, they share deep cuts from that classic duo’s rich catalog while reinventing and revitalizing them through their own contemporary credence. Notably, the album was recorded in England with a British band that includes CJ Hillman on electric guitar and slide guitar, John Parker on double bass, Lewis ‘Burner’ Pugh on acoustic guitar, and Tim Prottey-Jones on drums. Nevertheless, this was clearly not intended to come across as some sort of archival offering. The pair retain their own distinctive identity, and though the songs share some early origins, the arrangements are both imaginative and exuberant, making it clear that the two were solidly committed to the cause. The pair have a classic combination, one that not only recalls Parton and Wagoner, but also Johnny and June, George and Tammy, and Conway and Loretta (and Gram and Emmylou – editor) . In other words, the connection and compatibility are in evidence throughout. On songs such “Life Rides the Train”, “More Than Words Can Tell”, “Pain Of Loving You”, and “Last Thing On My Mind” in particular, the emotion is apparent. In short, the pair have never sounded better. They are, by turns, spirited and sentimental, and the honesty and sincerity comes across in ways Both pure and unaffected. So too, their performances are underscored by rich, sweeping arrangements that make every song sound like a singular standout. They emulate the radio-ready sounds of the ‘60s and ‘70s, epic in its delivery and thoroughly engaging and engrossing throughout. In their efforts to emulate these two iconic artists, they’ve also made an album for the ages themselves.
