Creativity cannot be controlled. Sure, it can be guided and nurtured, curated and given a good talking to, however the creative process tends to have a mind of its own. There are days when the page remains blank and other times when there is not enough ink. In 2007, Todd Snider was experiencing a surge, and he recalls of the time that ‘it was very much a blur. A blur not because of the party going on, but because of how many songs I was coming up with. It was probably the pinnacle of my time making up songs. Like they were really coming at me, and I didn’t know what to do with them all. Many of the cuts recorded though not all released. Sixteen years on, Crank It, We’re Doomed, the album that gathered a few of the songs that had been pouring from Todd Snider’s creative mind, has received a commercial release in 2023. The album switches genres soundtracking the songs with persistent grooves (“The Last Laugh – Doomed Version”) and foot-stomping tales (“America’s Favorite Pastime – Doomed Version”). Todd Snider is a master storyteller, as the talking Blues of “The War on Terror” displays while Crank It, We’re Doomed spins around the sawdust floor on a Rockabilly beat with “Don’t Tempt Me”, entertains late-night Jazz noir for “What Made You Do It”, and sways on Country Folk strums in “But Seriously Folks”. Originally planned as a follow-up to East Nashville Skyline and The Devil You Know, the decision to shelve Crank It, We’re Doomed was about the content when Todd Snider listened and made a tough choice realizing ‘at the end, I was torn. I felt like not only did I have all these story songs, sort of normal songs, there also were all these protest songs. And really that is where I lost the plot. I had too many scenes in the movie, and I had too many songs. It was all over the map. But I also remember feeling like it wasn’t done either. Like it needed more songs’. “Slim Chance is Still a Chance – Doomed Version” is a Funky bounce as the tale of “Doll Face” travels over the patter of a finger-picked acoustic guitar while “Handleman’s Revenge” introduces a hard-luck family with a Rock’n’Roll beat and a Hand-Jive rhythms propel “Mission Accomplished (Because You Gotta Have Faith”.
