Tim Easton is the epitome of the thoughtful and expressive singer/songwriter. His songs resonate with essential emotion, all of which ensures an engaging encounter practically without exception. That’s especially true of his new album, the aptly named Find Your Own Way. Coming on the heels of two recent reissues, Special 20 and Not Cool -- both long out of print but still in demand by his diehard devotees — its songs are sensitive yet assured, each sung from a deeply personal perspective. The calming title track, the reassuring “Everything You’re Afraid Of”, the easy sway of “Jacqueline, and the soothing trio, “Here For You”, “By the End of the Night”, and “Little Brother” each offer a comforting caress, allowing the melodies to wash over the listener sweetly and serendipitously. It’s a cerebral sound, one borne from both feelings and fortitude. While his music is inevitably informed by Rock and Roll, particularly the Bluesier sway given such entries as “Bangin’ Drum (Inside My Mind)”, “Dishwasher’s Blues”, and “Arkansas Twisted Heart” — Easton generally opts for a more cerebral sound. So too, these songs urge their listeners to carefully consider the ideals they express in the process. Consisting of all meditative melodies, the new album offers another vivid showcase for Easton’s ability to softly seduce his fans and followers with his innately intriguing melodies and musings. That said, to call his music wholly irresistible may be overstating the case, and yet that assessment isn’t, in fact, wholly removed from reality. Nevertheless, those expecting instant gratification would best-advised to temper their expectations. Though rarified and refined, these songs are shared from a personal and, in turn, a pensive perspective. Tim Easton describes himself as a ‘decent observer’ of humankind and the ups and downs of our behavior. He goes on to label these tunes ‘feature films inside three-minute chunks of music’. It’s an apt description, given that they linger with a certain largess that frequently demands repeated hearings. That’s hardly a shortcoming however; each of these songs are worth the added investment in time and consideration. Consider Find Your Way equal to whatever time and effort this particular trek takes.
