The String Cheese Incident (from the album Lend Me A Hand available on SCI Fidelity Records) (by Bryant Liggett)
The String Cheese Incident wear a lot of musical hats. Easily categorized simply under ‘jam’, which is suitable for the long running (30 years and counting in 2023!) Colorado-based band, peel back the package and you’ll find some depth. Depth in the case on their latest, Lend Me A Hand, comes with them foregoing extended jams for an album where most of the tracks clock in around 4 minutes. Lend Me A Hand is an exploration of electric-Folk cuts, some with a bouncy shuffle, others with a subtle-Psychedelic vibe. The title track opener is killer; a lazy and laid back groover with great bar-room keys delivered by the always stellar Kyle Hollingsworth. That opener is one of a one-two punch, their playing capabilities on display in “Eventually” where all the talents, from Bill Nershi’s vocals and crisp acoustic to Michael Kang’s fiddle, set a solid tone and groove. They continue to drop mellow Psych-Folk via “Ain’t I Been Good to You” and the exploring “Thank You” before tossing out a mellow, click-clack rhythm of “I Will Follow You”. A late in the record star is “Way Back When” where Nershi’s guitar and Kang’s fiddle swap licks. Overlooked often is the musical talent of a band like SCI. If you see them live you know their stop on a dime-abilities, but this record showcases snippets of instrumental prowess amongst songwriting ability. It’s a solid teaser for when they stretch things out in the live setting.
