The Shootouts (from the album Stampede available on The Shootouts/Soundly Music) (by Bryant Liggett)
The Shootouts have recruited an all-star cast of colleagues for their latest release, Stampede. Not that any musical ringers are needed for this Country quartet, who remain quite competent at banging out the heavy hammer of Country Rock. Toss in Buddy Miller and Marty Stuart, Jim Lauderdale, Raul Malo, and Ray Benson (who performs and produces) along with Asleep at The Wheel and you’ve got a solid offering, as Stampede rocks and rolls, jangles and bounces, hitting every hot sound in the Roots Rock world. The Shootouts charge out of the gate with Marty Stuart along for the ride on “Better Things to Do” as they deliver Telecaster twang via power-chords. The guitar theatrics continue on the title track, a punky-fueled instrumental that should score a car chase. Buddy Miller joins on the jangly “Anywhere But Here”. It is no surprise Ray Benson and Asleep at the Wheel’s contribution is full-blown Western Swing. “Tomorrow’s Knockin’”, with Jim Lauderdale, and “Must Be a Broken Heart” are both ripe for two-stepping. The Shootouts nail a Gospel ballad to “Angel’s Work” and they close like they opened with more Marty Stuart, returning with an acoustic version of “Better Things to Do”. Like Stuart with his own band, The Shootouts prove they Rock, plugged in or out. This is Alt Country on the Pop side while also delivering on every angle of Country, from Two-Steppers or high energy instrumentals, to swing or simple, twang inspired Roots Rock. Saying you like Country music is casting of a wide net, and with Stampede you’re pulling in a big catch.
