The Secret Sisters (from the album Mind, Man, Medicine available on New West Records) (by Danny McCloskey)
A human wearing a space suit, tethered to a spaceship by thick cords while still rolling and tumbling through the universe. That is the sound of “Space”, the opening cut on Mind, Man, Medicine, the recent release from The Secret Sisters. The melody drifts, floating free as the words speak directly to love, be it a spouse or a partner, mother, father, siblings, or children as The Secret Sisters assure ‘I am holding space for you, and whatever you’re going through’ as the storyline moves between earth’s ocean and the stardust overhead. Explaining the album title, The Secret Sisters offer experience, ‘balance out my chemicals and erase all my recall, man, mind, medicine, I’ve tried them all’, as they send out the words asking ‘is there anybody out there, we’re all drowning in the same water as you’ in “Same Water”. Supported by the same sibling perfect harmonies of previous albums, Mind, Man, Medicine showcases a mature assuredness from The Secret Sisters, in songwriting and performance. Mostly recorded at legendary FAME Studios in Muscle Shoals, Alabama, and produced by The Sisters, John Paul White, and Ben Tanner (St Paul & The Broken Bones, Lera Lynn), the album is an intimate look into the lives of siblings Laura Rogers and Lydia Slagle. Their past few years provide maps of personal growth as they move to a place of peace and calm now a part of life for The Secret Sisters. Faith in their words, and the promises of safety they convey, is an easy step as Mind, Man Medicine follows the beautifully linked vocals of The Secret Sisters. The vow “I’ve Got Your Back” and “I Can Never Be Without You” show clear intentions in the song title, as family secrets, prayers, and astrology are the background for “If the World Was a House” while a church basement piano beats out the backing for “I Needed You”. A cinematic beauty plays out in each song of Mind, Man, Medicine as southwest dust surrounds the rhythms behind “Paperweight”. The Secret Sisters are joined by Ray LaMontagne as they profess love and encourage diving deep in “All the Ways”.
