The Reverend Shawn Amos (from the album Soul Brother #1 available on Shawn Amos / Immediate Family Records) (by Bryant Liggett)
The Reverend Shawn Amos’s latest, Soul Brother #1, is destined to become someone’s Soul record #1. Someone who put on the latest release from The Reverend, and wasn’t able to lift this collection of Soul and Funk in a Rock’n’Roll package off the turntable. Soul Brother #1 is cool, where laid back offerings and funky thumpers are part of a record that’s beautiful and super-smart. The album has Rock riffs in the track one-two punch of “Revelation” and “Stone Cold Love”, before dipping into the laid-back Gospel of “What It Is to Be Black” and the funky thumper in “It’s All Gonna Change (For the Better)”. “Soul Brother No. 1” has big funky horns and “Hammer” has great psychedelic guitar, both cuts ripe for a Blaxploitation film from the 1970’s or from the 21st Century. This future Soul and Funk classic gives a big nod to a Sly and the Family Stone soul and funk classic doing “Don’t Call Me N*****, Whitey”, closing with a lovely ballad of cool optimism in “Things Will Be Fine”. What a record. It’s a groover, Modern Funk and slow Soul ballads. There’s killer instrumentation and vocal perfection from The Reverend Shawn Amos and company, a future and present Funk classic. Icing on the cake for Shawn Amos, the son of cookie staple Famous Amos.
