7/4/2023 The Pink Stones You Know Who
The Pink Stones (from the album You Know Who available on New West Records) (by Bryant Liggett)
The Pink Stones raise a Country music flag and fly it high. The Athens, Georgia band 2021 debut was a solid introduction to players digging into Cosmic American music. You Know Who takes things a few steps further into American Country music on The Pink Stones sophomore effort. It’s a strong follow-up from a band sounding as if they’ve done a bit of time travel, dropping a release that could live comfortably alongside any Classic Country record dropped between the late 1960’s into the early 1980’s. It's outlaw and animated as it drops twangy hooks ripe for two stepping. The Pink Stones is on point right out of the gate, opener “Roses & Poppies” loaded with fiddle and pedal steel fills landing in every appropriate place. Late 1970’s Country music had a disco groove to it, and that’s written with a most complimentary tone, and “Baby, I’m Still (Right Here with You) is stacked with the same rhythms. “Who’s Laughing Now” is a solid Rocker, the quick, less than a minute interlude in “Still Laughing” reveals Southern Rock guilty pleasures, and “Someone You Can’t Move” is a crying in the beer weeper. Yet with all the Country, The Pink Stones are not without their experimental side. Hints of Indie Roots and Psychedelics rear a subtle head, revealing a band comfortable with digging into a past while also unafraid to take confident steps into a musical future.
