The Howdies (from the album Howdies All Around

The Howdies (from the album Howdies All Around available on New West Records) (by Bryant Liggett)
The Howdies are Country cool. Another feather in the cap for the city of Athens, Georgia. Add them to the long and eternally growing list of great bands out of what could be the Indie music capital of the planet, no matter the genre. As to style selection, The Howdies are a Country band, damn the specifics. Their debut, Howdies All Around, offers Country music in various flavors; a taste of Cosmic, a dash of Outlaw, and a dose of Alternative, The Howdies musically touch on all the things that make Mother Country cool.
The Howdies charge out of the gate with the rowdy “Hello, Jukebox”, their abilities to score a good time on full display while also showing they know a little music history in “Buddies”. Penned by co-frontperson Shoni Rancher, it’s a subtle nod to ‘The Day the Music Died’ and a major nod to Waylon Jennings. “Staying Standing” is a skip-along feel-good tune with a load of lyrics that describe someone ‘with the whole world underneath my feet’ while “The Devils Side” has a big, stadium Rock Blues riff and “Quittin’ Time” packs a load of drinking regrets into one song, reminding us that ‘fun’ was a lot more enjoyable in younger years. “To Love & Forget” has a great Country lounge vibe that was prevalent in late 70’s Country music. Howdies All Around closes with the Cosmic Country ambient noir cut of “Twilight on the Plains”.
Produced by Athens music scene T. Hardy Morris and David Barbe, The Howdies deliver a Country record with Indie Rock driving, a big nod to today’s Indie Country and the great classic Country of yesterday. (by Bryant Liggett)
