The Glass Hours (from the album The Glass Hours available on Cornelius Chapel Records) (by Bryant Liggett)
As The Glass Hours, Megan Barbera and Brad Armstrong strike Folk duo gold. While the two have a past of solo ventures, it is their voices that were meant to support each other and ring out side by side. Which is what they do on their self-titled The Glass Hours, a stellar showcase of harmony delivered in soft and hushed tones that are quiet and quaint. The opening track treads into twang territory thanks to guitar fills, with Armstrong taking the first verse, Barbera the next. It’s a narrative about two people, possible lovers, with both vocalists giving gripping detail about each of their characters; it’s a picturesque opener that sets the soft vocal tone and vivid lyrical detail of the album. That soft tone continues through all nine tracks as they dish out a load of memorable lines. ‘The boardwalk is singing with a thousand golden tongues’ from “Scarlet Tongues” and ‘would you be my good friend if I wasn’t good enough’ from “Sing My Song” are two of many that stick with you. “Silver for Mine Eyes” is reminiscent of anything from public domain libraries, a haunting tune that sounds a century old, and the closer “Annie” has the perfect dose of reverb, as if the vocals were recorded in a haunted silo. The Glass Hours is a combo of Country and Roots that is soulful and laidback wonderful. This is another feather in the cap for Alabama’s Cornelius Chapel Records, a label that will drop soft Country and Hard Rock, its diversity perfect for music fans unafraid to be bound by genres.
