The Dry County Crooks (from the album Love, Life, and Death available as a self-release) (by Bryant Liggett)
The path to Outlaw Country starts on the Alt Country road. At least it does for anyone reared on Indie, Alternative, or Punk Rock, as your way from Social Distortion to Waylon Jennings or Johnny Cash may start with Green on Red, Old 97s, or Dry County Crooks, whose recently dropped EP Life, Love & Death is textbook Alt Country, a blast of locomotive rhythms and twangy guitars. A brief Folk rhythm introduces the album on “Broken Bond” before power chords kick in with that aforementioned train rhythm as frontman Vinny D. sings about broken and lost relationship, hopeful that it will be found and fixed. “Dallas, Oregon” toys with Pop music while keeping the click-clack rhythm alive, and they throw down a heavy, crying in your beer Outlaw ballad with “Picture in Time”. “Sad Season” is nothing short of a solid Rocker that finds Vinny D. shouting more than singling, and the closing title track although softer, still has chicken-picking fills, with Vinny D. dropping references to his full-time job as a counselor. This is their first release of new music in over a dozen years, for reasons that could be its own Country song. Redemption, however, is awesome. As EP’s tend to be, this is a brief, but fun and Rocking dose of Country that will scratch that itch of both Punk and Country, while also serving as both educator and motivator, pushing you to similar sounds. It’s a musical bonus of sounds for today and many yesterdays.
