The Claudettes (from the album The Claudettes Go Out! available on Forty Below Records) (by Danny McCloskey)
For their recent release, The Claudettes staged the songs as a series of musical vignettes, each story placed in an audio photo album, The Claudettes Go Out!. Sultry and cinematic, The Claudettes piano-wizard Johnny Iguana concocts a heady brew of scenarios that welcome characters created the listener as much as the author. Friends and family, strangers on the street, or the all-too-familiar human in the mirror every morning share storylines on The Claudettes Go Out!. Vocalist Berit Ulseth polishes and carves out the songs with chameleon emotions, her mind wandering across visions of the past and present in “Time Won’t Take Out Times Away” as she showcases the reality of relationships for “The Show Must Go On (And Then the Show Must End)”, and supportive of an against-all-odds longshot with “Dozing in the Crypt”. The pros and cons of seeking fame are cast as a laundry list read over a persistent thump of a beat for “Exposure” while a skipping rhythm introduces a hero set against a backdrop of “The American Sky”. Bright melodies are the greeters for an entrance into The Claudettes Go Out! in “A Lovely View” while cautionary tales are carried in “There’s Too Much Affection in This World” as The Claudettes surf the undulating sway of “The Waves”, put Country cabaret on the marquee for “Cowboy”, and sit on “Park Bench” comfortable with a calm vocal as melodies swirl and lush orchestration keeps the delivery warm.
