The Birth of Rock’n’Roll: The Illustrated History of Sun Records (from the coffee table book)

The Birth of Rock’n’Roll: The Illustrated History of Sun Records (from the coffee table book available The Birth of Rock’n’Roll: The Illustrated History of Sun Records on Welden Owen Press) (by Danny McCloskey)
The claims in the title are big shoes to fill, however, Sun Records stands tall claiming the label ground zero for Rock’n’Roll. In the early 1950’s, Sam Phillips began Memphis Recording Service. His first years were filled with wondering how to make some money for his efforts. Sam Phillips created Sun Records in 1952, the subsequent years making sure that capital was no longer an issue. Elvis Presley arrived in 1954, followed by Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins, and Jerry Lee Lewis in 1956, the four marquee names infamously coming together for the Million Dollar Quartet sessions. The Birth of Rock’n’Roll: The Illustrated History of Sun Records is broken up into two segments to cover the label’s history, Part 1 covering 1952 through 1969, Part 2 chronicling 1969 to 2022. Sandwiched between the two historical tomes is the illustrated part of the book, 70 artists who changed the course of music are given a gatefold nod to their personal histories and images. The Birth of Rock’n’Roll: The Illustrated History of Sun Records is a beautifully put together work of art.
The historical component to the book, with a Foreword by Jerry Lee Lewis and content authoring from Peter Guralnick and Colin Escott, focuses on more than simply press release praise. The hits share space with The Ones That Got Away as well as stories about the other labels that were spawned from Sun Records. Recording had quieted to a slow trickle in the 1960’s for Memphis Recording Service, the last Sun Record hit coming in 1964 from Sam the Sham & The Pharoahs with “Wooly Bully”.
The Birth of Rock’n’Roll: The Illustrated History of Sun Records is a masterpiece, giving a glossy shout-out to the women and men who defined an era, and birthed a musical movement.(by Danny McCloskey)
