The Arcadian Wild (from the album Welcome

The Arcadian Wild (from the album Welcome available as an independent release) (by Lee Zimmerman)

Despite a name that conjures up images of some far-flung wilderness, the Nashville-based trio The Arcadian Wild create a decidedly delicate sound, one shared through the combined plucking of guitar, mandolin, fiddle, and bass, effectively delivered by three voices melded in perfect high-pitched harmony. Theirs is an approach graced by a certain Folk finesse, done so deftly as to extract the pure sentiment and emotion that’s so obviously intended.

As a result, Welcome beckons its listeners in ways its title obviously implies. Whether it’s the stirring sounds of “Lift My Head” or the adept instrumental “Garradh Seileach”, the songs hold sway, each providing a hypnotic and enticing entreaty conveyed through both charm and a caress. With some 13 songs in total, Welcome offers a momentary refuge from the stress and turmoil that plague today’s everyday existence, while offering a reminder that indeed, music possesses the power to soothe the spirit when that comfort is called for.

That’s apparent from the outset, with the gentle strains of the opening track “Lara”, through to the soft and soothing “Dopamine”, the expressive soundscape imagined with “Big Sky, MT”, and the two songs that find them literally in full flight, “Little Bird,” and “Sparrow.” The fact that the songwriting is self-contained reinforces the fact that this group — Isaac Horn (guitar, vocals), Lincoln Mick (mandolin, vocals), and Bailey Warren (fiddle vocals), with an assist from Erik Coveney on bass — have both the means and the imagination to bring their wistful designs to full fruition. Even a song that laments the dissolution of a romance, that being, appropriately, the concluding track on the album, “The End”, takes an uplifting and upbeat approach that belies any sense of sadness or regret.

Ultimately, Welcome is all the title suggests, a set of songs that beckon the listener to fully engage, and in turn, soak up the seductive sound The Arcadian Wild so effectively employ. It’s hard to imagine a warmer welcome than that. (by Lee Zimmerman)
