Soulful and slick, open-hearted Indie Roots. That’s the name of the game with The Americans, who on their latest EP in Strays drop heavy chords amidst soft songs while revving the emotional level up past ten. It’s heavy and sad with a hook or two that digs a hook right into your ear that hangs on. Ambient and airy beginnings come in with “When You Get Back” before The Americans go into ballad mode as guitar player and vocalist Patrick Farris features a big, aching growl in his vocals. “Land of the Free” speaks to freedom. Farris claiming ‘my folks and I never saw eye to eye’ while slight piano rolls cuts to a barroom, the spotlight focused on a lonely lounge singer as The Americans mention ‘land of the freeway, home of the strays’ dropping get out of town hints via sleeping bags and catching rides. “William” plays out like a big, inspirational ballad with a fist pumping pace, while “I Belong to You Now” and “Kingdom” drip with emotion, the latter built on very distinct and very direct drum rhythms. Things close with acoustic versions of “Give Way” and “Land of the Free” showcasing a stripped-down vibe to The Americans. This is a band that wears its heart on its sleeve and isn’t afraid to feature their emotions up front with each and every song. Those emotions are just as heavy on this short EP, where subtle jangle lives via songs that roll from soft to sharp.
