Ted Russell Kamp (from the album California Sun

Ted Russell Kamp (from the album California Sun on KZZ Records/Blue Elan) (by Lee Zimmerman)

Suffice it to say, Ted Russell Kamp fits the exact definition of a true multi-tasker. Given his day job as musical director of the Shooter Jennings Band, and his well-regarded reputation as a producer and sideman to any number of A level artists, — Tanya Tucker, Whitey Morgan and Jessi Colter, among them — it’s somewhat remarkable that he also managed to put out a dozen albums of his own over the course of more than 25 years.

Nevertheless, Kamp opted to take his time while working on California Son, allowing the music to gestate while he considered what direction the new project would take.

When he finally concluded the recording after two years of working from home, the concept gelled in the form of an autobiographical album, with songs written from a personal perspective and the friends and fortunes he was blessed to find after his move to California. His affection for the Golden State is evident immediately when listening to the title track, a robust Rocker that kicks off the proceedings and provides the set-up for practically all that follows. The steady, surge of songs such as “Roll Until the Sun Comes Up”, “One Word at a Time”, “The Upside to the Downside”, “Miracle Mile”, and “Shine On” (the latter given an assist from I See Hawks in L.A.) follow suit, ensuring the exuberance and enthusiasm remain intact from song to song.

That’s not to say every track is delivered at full throttle. “Every Little Thing” comes across as more considered and even philosophical in its tone and treatment, while the shimmer of steel guitar underscores the mellow, meandering melody that ripples through “Ballad of the Troubadour”. On the other hand, there’s no disguising the joy and jubilation that echoes from “High Desert Fever”. It, like every other song on the album, reflects Kamp’s absolute enthusiasm, leaving no doubt as to the glow he gets as a California Son. (by Lee Zimmerman)
