Sunny War (from the Anarchist Gospel available on New West Records)

Sunny War (from the Anarchist Gospel available on New West Records) (by Danny McCloskey)
With Anarchist Gospel, singer/songwriter Sunny War creates music with a message. Sunny War is a voice-to-be-heard as she describes DIY ways to elicit change, granting Anarchist Gospel the role of both musical endeavor and statement of survival. Her vocals are low and engaging, Sunny War issuing a mellifluous rumble as she shares conversations in her head with “I Got No Fight”, hops on a train-track beat for “His Love”, and smoothly rides caffeinated guitar strings and a hammered groove through “No Reason”. Her words confront rather than comfort, Anarchist Gospel is a proclamation built on tough love. Musically, the album freely moves between Folk, Rock’n’Roll, Americana, and Soul, Sunny War effortlessly mastering each sound with a presence that demands attention.

She believes that ‘there are two sides of me. One of them is very self-destructive, and the other is trying to work with that other half to keep things balanced’. That is the invisible line running through Anarchist Gospel, the songs presenting experience and options as Sunny War points out that ‘I am not a remedy’ (“Higher” ft. David Rawlings). David Rawlings joins with Chris Pierce on “Swear to Gawd”, returning to back Sunny on the rhythmic rumble of “Shelter and Storm”. The album is alive with guest appearances, welcoming in artists Jack Lawrence (The Raconteurs), Micah Nelson, John James Tourville (The Deslondes), Kyshona Armstrong, and Dennis Crouch as well as Jim James (My Morning Jacket) on “Earth”. Allison Russell and Chris Peirce are on album opener “Love’s Death Bed” and back Sunny War as she greets the dawn in “Hopeless”.  While the album collects the original songs of Sunny War, it offers versions with tracks from Van Hunt (“Hopeless”) and Ween (“Baby Bitch”).
