Sue Foley (from the album One Guitar Woman available on Stony Plain Records) (by Danny McCloskey)
Sue Foley writes her own press release with the album title for her recent release. One Guitar Woman names the female on the album over as well as writing the album credits for One Guitar Woman. For her backing on the album, Sue Foley accompanies her songs with just a single acoustic instrument, a nylon-string Flamenco guitar purchased from a master luthier on a trip Paracho, Mexico in 2022. Sue cites that ‘I wanted a flamenco because you can beat them up a little bit more than the classicals --classicals are very resonant and pristine, but a flamenco is a little more utilitarian. I needed something with a little more grit, and I decided on a beautiful Flamenca Negra from Salvador Castillo’. The album opens with “Oh Babe It Ain’t No Lie” a cut from the catalog of Elizabeth Cotton, and influential Blues and Folk guitarist from Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Born in 1893, Elizabeth Cotton was awarded a 1984 Grammy for her live album at 80 years old. One Guitar Woman also features Elizabeth Cotton’s “Freight Train” as well as Sister Rosetta Tharpe’s “My Journey to the Sky” and “Maybelles Guitar”, a Sue Foley original dedicated to Mother Maybelle Carter. For her muse, and as a nod to women pioneers in the guitar, Sue Foley honors predecessors, performing songs from Memphis Minnie (“In My Girlish Days”, “Nothing in Rambling”) Lydia Mendoza, Charo, and French classical guitarist Ida Presti. Sue Foley digs deep for lesser-known guitar innovators with songs from Southern Blues women Geeshie Wiley and Elvie Thomas. As she nods to the women who influenced her playing Sue Foley showcases her own talent on the six-string backing the songs of One Guitar Woman with a prowess that makes her a peer to those that came before.
