Sour Bridges (from the album Down and Out available as a self-release) (by Bryant Liggett)
Austin’s Sour Bridges are spot on when describing their sound as ‘browngrass’. You can get to brown from a series of blends, just as you get to the sound of Sour Bridges from blending genres. Start with a healthy dose of Rock, toss in Classic Country and Bluegrass, some Cowpunk and a danceable jig, add in some alcohol and broken-hearted influenced twang and you get Sour Bridges brand. That blend of a sound is on full display via Down and Out, the latest batch of cuts from a seasoned band well versed in a wide-swath of Roots music. A flat-picked riff introduces the title track as album opener, dropping right into a driving locomotive rhythm and the occasional blast of power chords; it’s a rocker for a sad song as vocalist Bill Pucci sings ‘she’s all I’m thinking about’. “Have You Seen My Baby” is a little Nu-Grass with a jostle of a jig, “Texas Man” is an ambient, Psychedelic ballad, and “A Pair of Arms” is Classic Country. You can find a train song inside “The County Line” while “Drinking All the Way Home” is a powerful Cowpunk drinking song and “We Will Be” hints at a Cajun-two stepper. Every ingredient that makes you love Bluegrass, Cowpunk or Country music is here. Lonely and aching fiddles rearing their sounds around heartbreak stories; whipping guitars and banjos, sad harmonies and rail-rocking click-clack rhythms are all part of a well-balanced blend of Roots and Rock.
