Selwyn Birchwood (from the album Exorcist available on Alligator Records) (by Bryant Liggett)
Titling his recent release Exorcist, Selwyn Birchwood helps show demons the door in his message however the Florida-based Bluesman could easily take on the role of alchemist as he mixes a heady brew for the soundscape. Stirring in Blues, Psychedelic-tinged Rock touches, Funk grooves that move to the music, and the sound of sweet Southern Soul, Selwyn Birchwood sets the dial for stun as he guides the stories with a powerful vocal while his guitar bends, twists, and wraps around the words like tendrils of kudzu. Exorcist laundry lists potions and sage sticks as a way to rid himself of the spirits haunting the title track as Selwyn Birchwood turns an audio newscast into the storyline of “FLorida Man” and puts up a warning sign in “Swim at Your Own Risk” over a thick swamp groove, duetting the guitar lead howl with real life police sirens. The music shifts its method of delivery on Exorcist, Selwyn Birchwood carrying a torch into the album for traditional Blues on opening cut “Done Cryin’” while “Hopeless Romantic” picks out a wiggly lead to surf on the bounce of sonic waves that course across the track. A snarling riff leads the way into “Horns Below Her Halo” as Exorcist lays claim to “My Own Worst Enemy” on a smooth Blues shuffle. Selwyn Birchwood raises up some R&B rhythms to introduce “Lazarus”, lets the sway of Soul music cradle “Plenty to Be Grateful For”, pulling out all the stops to lead a high-steeping parade of horns and slick guitar playing towards the album exit with “Show Tune”.
