Scott H Biram (from the album The One and Only Scott H Biram available on Bloodshot Records) (by Bryant Liggett)
Scott H. Biram is a bad-ass. Any review of any of his albums should start with that sentence since he is a musician who, whether on stage or in studio, plays like it’s his last night on earth. As Biram throws down a hard hand of Heavy Metal and loud Rock into his spitting vocal, power-chord, and string-breaking brand of dirty Blues on his latest, The One and Only Scott H. Biram, he is also tossing out more proof-positive of the aforementioned bad-assness.
A rough riff backed by power chords kicks the record off via “No Mans Land” with Biram setting the scene of shacks in dark woods, the requisite setting for his lyrical scenarios. Before he moves between big riff Metal Blues and funky (in both definitions of the word) acoustic ditties with “High and Dry”, he delivers out a killer line in ‘that’s just because you can’t catch a buzz when the worlds kickin’ shit in your eye’. “I’ll Still Miss Ruby” is a guitar picking ballad both haunting and sad and he bangs out a pumped up mover of a Garage Rocker in “Dig a Hole Big Liar” before he has some spaced out, studio fun with a tripped out “InterTransmissions”. “Inside a Bar” is a drinker’s ballad, “Rather Be High” is a fantastic screamer, and the album closes with the acoustic “Death Has No Mercy”.
Scott H Biram’s alternating between dirty Garage Blues with a Metal twist and front porch Blues picking is the best of both worlds. Aggressive music doesn’t always need electricity, and Biram latest proves Blues can be in Hard Rock, Hard Rock can be in Blues. (by Bryant Liggett)
