Ryan Adams (from the album Nebraska available on PAX-AM Records) (by Bryant Liggett)
It’s hard to improve on what many critics refer to as perfection. Nor is ‘Improve’ likely Ryan Adams intent as he takes on a song by song covering of Bruce Springsteen’s Nebraska, just like it wasn’t Los Lobo’s, Hank III’s, Aimee Mann’s or any of the other artists that were collected and came together honoring The Boss’s 1982 effort on Sub Pop Records back in 2000. It is just an artist honoring a hero who has loads of music worthy of being honored.
Ryan Adams being Ryan Adams, his version of Nebraska comes off with plenty of Folk leanings, straightforward and honest. But there’s also an experimental feel, with Ryan Adams adding a bit of beefiness to some of the cuts that originally were kept quite minimal. The title track, “Atlantic City”, “Mansion on the Hill”, and “Open All Night” come off sounding like Adams, but not straying too far from Springsteen’s original intent.
“Johnny 99” has some great rev, pep and hipness, “Highway Patrolman” is strong and heavy with a rhythm section behind it, and “State Trooper” is covered with a subtle yet stoner Blues vibe. The closer in “Reason to Believe” is singular and lonely, sounding great in its sadness. Judge Ryan Adams on his music and his music alone and you’ll find he’s got another record in the win column.
