Rattlesnake Milk (from the album Chicken Fried Snake available on Feel So Good Records) (by Bryant Liggett)
Texas quartet Rattlesnake Milk scores an Outsider dream-world. The outlaw lead in the storyline is a Cosmic Country Cowboy and a mushroom-ingesting desert wanderer, an aggro-surfer and Western-noir anti-hipster. and the Rattlesnake Milk latest, Chicken Fried Snake, is the ever-present soundtrack. Rarely has a record been so perfect for so many, a testament to diverse genres. Punky Outlaw Country with a psychedelic dose of twangy Surf Rock. Few pull that off without being labeled a novelty act. Rattlesnake Milk is as real as a blowing tumbleweed crossing your path or the ocean sending another wave your way. There’s the drifting of “On the Road” and the click-clack rhythm under the mysterious guitar intro of “Come on Home”. “Die Young” is a haunting murder ballad that sounds like Edgar Allen Poe wrote for the American West, questioning its creator. Rattlesnake Milk moves into FM-Radio Rock territory simply with the floating and heavy-handed guitar solo heard in “Looking for a Halo”, and they show some Indie Rock, Punk chops when the click-clack rhythm returns on “Coyote”. This record is a handful of road songs for the weary, desperate, and lonely. They are also dream songs for those who vision a vast, Western landscape but will likely never see it. They are also surreal songs for that psychedelic campfire, a campfire surrounded by some of the best and loveable outlaws.
