Rainbow Girls (from the album Welcome to Whatever available as a self-release)
Geographically, Rainbow Girls, located north of the San Francisco Bay Area, are far away from the Southern catch-all phrase ‘bless your heart’ being a beneficial mantra for those passing souls we may otherwise like to trip as they walk by. To open the latest release, Welcome to Whatever, Rainbow Girls send out wishes of love over a shimmery fog of distortion. Pointing out defects in the daily as they promise ‘love you to infinity’ in “Compassion to the Nth Degree”. As with all of the songs, Rainbow Girls deliver the message with honest tenderness in their three-part harmony. Their voices beautifully hover over the dreamy motion of “Bedroom Lobby” while Rainbow Girls claim their ground amid the barrage of bad news tossed our way in the horn-dappled “Patriotism Killed the Cat”. Joined by fellow Bay Area band The California Honeydrops, Rainbow Girls reference Sly Stone on the Rock’n’Soul groove of “No Limits” as they address human labelling. Time changes the places we have loved in the past, new times burying memories under urban renewal. Welcome to Whatever uses “City Slickers” to send a note to San Franisco as Rainbow Girls let harmonies drift across echoed electric guitar chords in “Unwavering”, surf a pattering rhythm for “Anchored in Time”, whisper a message of goodbye in “Jonah’s Song”, and float lazily over the rolling rhythms of “Meet You at the Gate”.
