Pi Jacobs (from the album Soldier On

Pi Jacobs (from the album Soldier On available from Blackbird Record Label) (by Bryant Liggett)
Pi Jacobs soldiers on in a charging not trudging way, as her latest in Soldier On finds the singer songwriter stretching the definition and sounds of Folk and doing so with an air of boldness and confidence. She takes on Folk, Blues, laid back Laurel Canyon-esque easy-breezy Rock, and even some Pop via Gospel. The diverse genres mix into a easy to dig into sound.
File the opener in “Hallelujah” under Gospel of the self as Pi Jacobs sings ‘hallelujah, its just me again, I’ve been waiting for that front door to slam’ in a song that celebrates the single. “Coyote” has reverb kissed backing ‘awooooo’ to kick off this bouncer, the tunes backing vocals giving the record a quick Beach Boys touch. “Smoke Signals” is a rescue cut that features a World Beat rhythm section heavy sound, and she walks a funky edge on “Shoo Fly”.
The closer in “I Don’t Feel Lonely” is an admission as Jacobs reveals “I don’t feel lonely when I sing;” perhaps the kind of thing to keep the lonely wolves at bay, as she ends on a big ballad. The albums deep lyrics and acoustic guitar define the Folk on Soldier On, the dobro defines Blues-Folk on Soldier On. It’s solid instrumentation and firm backing for her gutsy voice that’s a commanding croon. (by Bryant Liggett)
