The Nick Moss Band featuring Dennis Gruenling gets into Old School Chicago Blues in a big way on their sixth album, Get Your Back Into It!. These five-time Blues Music Awards winners are revitalizing the classic Chicago Blues sound with a healthy dose of Southern Jump Blues and just a touch of Swing. The Nick Moss Band featuring Dennis Gruenling (NMB) plays good time music that compels you to shake off all your cares on the nearest dance floor. “Bait in the Snare” captures Big Joe Turner at full throttle. Nick Moss’ big, throaty baritone offers the sage advice ‘if .you don’t fall for the bait, you won’t struggle in the snare’. His guitar licks are the spoonful of sugar that helps the medicine of his words go down. A blistering harmonica solo by Gruenling punctuates the message and the music with an exclamation point. “Losing Ground” is classic Chicago Blues as Moss dispenses more advice to ‘be careful how you speak. Think twice about what you say. Because if it’s someone you love, you might drive them away’. The rhythm section propels the song forward with flourishes of piano and harmonica adding flair. “Choose Wisely” is the last of NMB’s cautionary songs. With a subtle Swing melody, piano and horns come to the fore as the tempo drops back a notch to reveal an early Ray Charles influence. “Get Your Back Into It”, “Your Bark Is Worse Than Your Bite”, and “The Solution” are Chicago Blues in its finest form. All three songs highlight Moss’ scorching guitar and Gruenling’s pulsing harmonica to great effect. “Aurelie” and “It Shocks Me Out” pay tribute to Elvin Bishop’s style of ‘Talkin’ Blues’. The Nick Moss Band slows down and gets a little grittier on the Delta Blues inspired “Living In Heartache” and “Lonely Fool”. Returning to the Jump Blues of Big Joe Turner, “Man on the Move” is a joyful groove on the move. Stepping away from the mics, NMB go instrumental on the Swing Jazz of “Out of the Woods”, the Salsa flavored Blues of “Bones’ Cantina”, and the Surf Rock fusion of “Scratch and Sniff”. Full of wit, wisdom, and whimsy, Get Your Back Into It! is chock full of righteous, rollicking Blues riffs that you’ll want to get back into again and again.
