My Politic (from the album Missouri Folklore – Songs & Stories from Home available as a self-release) (by Bryant Liggett)
The duo of My Politic have dropped a Folk record loaded with cold hard realities. Reality and all its worth, the good and the bad, joy and pain, laughter and tears. They have done so with minimal instrumentation and maximum storytelling, Missouri Folklore: Songs & Stories from Home an album heaped with picturesque tales of beat-up neighborhoods and cruel gods, bike-rides, smoking weed after work, and friends that have come and gone. Any record with a hint of twang should drop a waltz, and My Politic (Kaston Guffey and Nick Pankey) knock that off the to-do list quick, simple, and straight out of the gate with “Missouri Waltz”. The melody nods to old-time music and the geographic area that spawned so many of this record’s stories. “Buzzards on a Powerline” is a heartbreaker of a tale of leaving both town and bad habits while loved ones are those ‘buzzards on a powerline’. “Sleepin’ Off the Blues” is dive bus-station in the middle of the night sad and “Chasing Tomorrow” has wonderful festival instrumentation, where sly fiddle slips in through all the right cracks. It is all about the familiar stories. Whether you’re in The Southeast, the Midwest, or a gritty city in France, this is an album of the sad and familiar, and they let us know that despite the million souls on earth or the miles between us all, we’re are all living, at times, the same sometimes forlorn, other times wonderful life. This is our soundtrack.
