Moonalice (from Full Moonalice Vol. 2 on Nettwerk Records) (by Lee Zimmerman)
Moonalice is a band with a storied past, one that’s descended from the hallowed legacy of ‘60s San Francisco. Its roster includes a legitimate icon in Lester Chambers, late of the Chamber Brothers, and his son Dylan Chambers, along with former Starship bassist Pete Sears, as well as The Tietjen (sisters Erika, Chloe, and Rachel Tietjen), Jason Crosby on keyboards, drummer John Malo, guitarists Roger McNamee and Barry Sless. The band’s new offering Full Moonalice Vol. 2, their second EP released thus far this year, places the same pronounced emphasis on vintage Soul and riveting R&B as its predecessor, along with a further measure of added exuberance. Opening track “Love, Peace, and Happiness” comes across with an anthemic energy that gains extra momentum courtesy of the track that follows, “You’re All I Need To Get By”. That celebratory sound dominates the proceedings overall, emphasizing the positive perspective. Of course, 60’s sensibilities are in full flourish, no surprise really considering those involved. So too, the apparent optimism provides a welcome respite from the trouble and turmoil that dominates many mindsets these days. The rousing revelry and soul-stirring vocals infused in songs such as “Yes We Can Can” and “Love Me Today” gives it further focus, but it’s an imaginative medley that combines the Beatles’ “All You Need Is Love” and “Put a Little Love In Your Heart, courtesy of Lester Chambers’ lead vocals, that more or less seals the deal. The Tietjen Sisters turn on “Uncle Johns Band” also adding a unique flourish, one that further affirms their ‘60s sentiments, while also allowing the band to amp-up the adrenalin. Ultimately, a legacy can provide legitimacy, but it’s the music made today that ensures continuing credibility. Happily then, Moonalice have the ability to fuse the sounds of past and present and share them in sync.
