Marcus King (from the album Mood Swings on Republic Records/UMG) (by Danny McCloskey)
By drawing on his darkest moments, Marcus King digs deep within himself to pen the words on Mood Swings, the latest release from the singer/guitar slinger combo. In return, the songs became a beacon for Marcus King, a light in the middle of the black thoughts in his head. In dealing with a mental illness that brought him to the brink of suicide, album producer Rick Rubin offered a different perspective for Marcus who credits the inspiration, recalling that ‘he helped me view mental health as a writing partner in a way. I’ve learned it can give me that creative spark’. An opening line loops the phrase ‘terrible hopelessness’ as Marcus King begins the Mood Swings song cycle with the title track. His guitar work sparkles when he pleads “Save Me”, asking to be free from ‘feeling like I’m trapped in my mind’ and deciding in life that he ‘don’t deserve to live without pain’ before crying out “Come Fuck My Life Again”. Backing the soul-baring tales is a soundtrack of lush instrumentation that recalls the late 70s style and grooves. Producer Rick Rubin and Marcus King assure that Mood Swings tracks as 2024 by modernizing both message and means of delivery. Marcus King checks into “Inglewood Motel (Halestorm)” on a smooth Soul groove as “Me or Tennessee” features Marcus fronting an organ trio while “Delilah” is introduced on a soulful piano ballad, “Bipolar Love” speaks its tale on a percolating beat, as Marcus King exits Mood Swings on a dreamy melody wrapping around “Cadillac”.
