Kyshona (from the album Legacy available on Kyshona Armstrong/Soundly Music) (by Bryant Liggett)
Nashville’s Kyshona has a sound that’s a bit of a melting pot. On her latest, Legacy, she drops a bit of Blues and a some funky Folk chords, mashing that up with a load of Soul. Funky Soulful Americana is an apt descriptor, and while we’re at it, add a touch of World Music vibe and you’re on the musical path Kyshona is going down. That tone is evident in album opener “Elephants” as Kyshona delivers a heavy cut that nods to the stoic being. “Waitin’ on the Lawd” is a laid-back groover that hints at Gospel that has Ruthie Foster kicking in her talent while “Alma Ree” is a cut that is stripped down and raw. Within that stripped down and raw cut is the fantastic line ‘let my tongue be your sword’…. if only everyone continued to use words not weapons. There’s an old-school, field recording simply titled “Interlude- Grandpa H.T and The Church Elders” that prefaces the wonderful traditional Gospel track “Heaven is a Beautiful Place”. Those interludes provide old-school drop-ins throughout the Legacy. “What’s In a Name” is a solid blast of Bluesy Funk, and that blast of cool grooves continues to roll right into “Comin’ Out Swinging” and doesn’t stop there as the funk remains for “Carolina”, the tune also featuring Keb’ Mo’. The guests in the aforementioned Ruthie Foster and Keb’ Mo’ are certainly a welcome addition, icing on a Kyshona cake that features fantastic instrumentation and a soulful, silky-smooth voice.
