Kelsey Waldon (from the album There’s Always a Song available on Oh Boy Records) (by Bryant Liggett)
Kelsey Waldon’s latest should take home all of the yearly Country music awards offered. Sadly, it probably won’t, as the CMA’s events you see on network TV continue to ignore real Country music. (That’s why Sturgill Simpson had to busk after his Grammy win and ignored by CMA – editor). So, while (insert cookie-cutter- Country-star) gets another award for an album that will be forgotten about next week, the recent Kelsey Waldon release, There’s Always a Song, will be praised by record collectors and true music fans tomorrow, and decades years from now.
Kelsey’s voice alone makes this record a keeper as she drops two vocal only cuts in the opener “Keep Your Garden Clean” and “Pretty Bird.” Her voice commands a stage alone. That voice, however, doesn’t have to, as it surrounds itself with a crack band and A-list guests.  “Hello Stranger” with S.G. Goodman has a Country Funk groove, “I Only Exist” finds her joined by Isaac Gibson of 49 Winchester for a solid dose of Classic Country while she turns Bill Monroe’s “Uncle Pen” into a mouth harp heavy, twangy bouncer with Amanda Shires on fiddle. It’s killer.
Kelsey Waldon gets Country music colleague Margo Price to jump in on the upbeat “Traveling the Highway Home” that’s delivered as a big package of NuGrass and Cow Punk, complete with that click-clack, locomotive rhythm, and that golden voice closes this record out with the beautiful and haunting “Your Lone Journey”. Critics may bum out on brevity, but not this one. Eight cuts, none of which will find you skipping past, render this record a no-filler offering of classic American Country worthy of a life spent in your record collection, with or without awards.
