At the heart of her songs is the truth speaking loudly in the words of Kelsey Waldon. Her recent release, No Regular Dog, collects stories of real lives, Kelsey Waldon sharing secrets of a mountain family over a funky backbeat snaking through the noir fog of an ethereal electric guitar for “History Repeats Itself”, the story warning ‘find your faith in someone else’. Chiming guitar chords sparkle when Kelsey Waldon sings a personal history lesson in “Tall and Mighty” as she peels back the curtain on the dull life of a young mountain citizen for “Sweet Little Girl”, finds hope with “Progress Again”, and claims her own skin in the No Regular Dog title track. Of the album, Kelsey Waldon shares ‘I hope that these songs are able to live with people and help make the world a little better, because I think that’s a big part of what my job is. At the end of the day, I’m so thankful for my passion for music because it’s sustained me throughout my whole life, and now I want it to do the same for other people. And if anyone’s struggling, I hope they can recognize the No Regular Dog within themselves, and start to see how much they’re really worth’. Born in Monkey’s Brow, Kentucky, Kelsey Waldon resides Nashville adjacent in Tennessee, citing local hero, and personal mentor, John Prine against the raw chords of “Season’s Ending” as she ‘counts blessings like stars’ in “Backwater Blues”. Produced by Shooter Jennings, No Regular Dog plays host to tenderness from a Kelsey Waldon song with “Love is Simple”, the songwriter recalling that ‘I was at home sitting on my back porch and I started thinking about how I’ve got all these heartbreak songs and drinking songs, but I’m not experiencing any of that anymore. I’m at a point where I’m in a healthy relationship with someone who actually cares about me, and I wanted to write a song that expresses what love feels like in its purest form’.
