Opening her latest release, Mantras, Katie Pruitt sets the stage for the album by introducing “All My Friends”. Crunchy guitar chords and a potent beat begin the song as the tale explains how ‘everybody’s hooked on something – second chances are a second coming – some kind of savior to say you’re so unique’. Pealing back the layers of her mind Katie Pruitt discovered herself, and she uses Mantras as her backstory experiences as a DIY guide for living your best you. Katie Pruitt wonders what life would be like in a different body (“Jealous of the Boys”) as she finds herself ‘out on a ledge looking for an exit’ as she wonders why her brain is ‘skeptical of every good intention’ (“Worse Case Scenario”), expanding the desire when revolving melodies create a beat to spell out her own “Self Sabotage“. Describing a personal process Katie Pruitt shared that ‘Mantras is a full circle journey from self-sabotage to self-compassion. Writing this record forced me to stop seeking external validation from the rest of the world and turn my focus inward. After hitting a low point that caused me to seek extensive therapy, I realized I had a problem with negative self-talk. So, I started writing down phrases of encouragement and repeating mantras in the mirror. Through this practice I learned how to be a kinder friend to myself and ultimately a kinder friend to others. When life gets heavy and the future feel overwhelmingly out of our control, we can learn to turn inwards and build a home inside of ourselves’. Mantras questions a higher power in “White Lies, White Jesus, and You” while enjoying what stories the night has to tell under the “Phases of the Moon” and introduces “The Waitress” as the album watches a “Leading Actress” playing out her role under the glow of a New Jersey moon. Katie Pruitt is a storyteller, and for Mantras her lead character looks back at her from the mirror of her words. She makes a wish to head back to younger days in “Naive Again” while examining family similarities for “Blood Related“. Exiting Mantras, Kaite Pruitt comes to a ”Standstill” as she is ‘walking on a tight rope hanging on to false hope’ realizing that ‘good things just take time’.
