Kassi Valazza (from the album Kassi Valazza Knows Nothing available on Fluff and Gravy Records) (by Bryant Liggett)
The AM Gold vibe is heavy in Kassi Valazza. For anyone that was hip to the AM radio frequency in the late 1960’s into the 1970’s, you know the sound, the feel. Whether an adult spinning the dial while driving an American made vehicle without wearing a seatbelt or if you were a kid stuck in the backseat absorbing one-hit wonders by the likes of Steam, Billy Swan, Mungo Jerry, and Lynn Anderson. Kassi Valazza Knows Nothing could have dropped in 1972 but it waited. Instead, this album, which features Valazza along with Portland neighbors TK & The Know-Nothings, is a heart-felt and clean collection of soft-Rock and Country with just a hint of Psychedelic and a whole lot of glorious way-back sound effects.
There’s a sturdy, rock-solid beat to the opener in “Room in the City”, a lonely two stepper where Valazza dips into great lyrical detail (something she does throughout the record) lamenting that the only thing keeping her company are the surrounding yellow walls of her room. “Watching Planes” wouldn’t be out of place in the Summer of Love, “Smile” is an end of the night, leave the bar on your own weeper, and “Wildageeses” is a lonely in every sense of the word Folk number; desolate in its lyrical delivery, instrumentation, and overall vibe.
Recorded live in the studio, The Holy Know Nothings knew little of the songs they were playing, and that loose vibe adds to the glory. Simple, uncomplicated, unpretentious and awesome, Kassi Valazza is a timeless narrator dropping a timeless record; AM Radio should sound this good in 2023. (by Bryant Liggett),
