Nick Dittmeier & The Sawdusters (from the album Heavy Denim available on sonaBLAST! Records) (by Bryant Liggett)
Nick Dittmeier and his band The Sawdusters keep one foot in the past, one in the present, their steps leading towards a musical tomorrow on the group’s latest Heavy Denim. Past influences drop an old school Country vibe, the present sounds a modern-day Roots Rocker, and that eye to the future incorporates blips and steady-vibe rhythms, making the whole package of music an outside of the box dash of Roots Rock that dabbles in subtle exploration. Nick Dittmeir & The Sawdusters turn the album opener “Suppose”, a straight ahead, mid-tempo Rock tune, into something that sounds like they’re a jam band ready for take-off before the guitar solo gives way to some space-age sound effects. “Turned and Walked Away” is a blast of twangy Blues, “Things Are Getting Strange” is a stripped down, minimal, and funky critique of things getting weird, and “You Don’t Know the Truth” is a laid-back ballad with programed rhythms. A deep, chicken-pickin’ rhythm kicks off the funny “Hotel Pens”, where Dittmeier sings of the best use of that random pen left in your hotel. “Doin’ Wrong” is something pulled from Southern California’s Paisley Underground. Heavy Denim is fun. Vivid stories live in the songs, melodies that are part Midwest Rock and part Country, all Roots and even a handful of Prog Rock. What the album is not is the same old Roots Rock dialed-in, package.
