Mid-tempo and laid back. Some listeners that dig a throw-back or two may even liken Going Places, the latest from Josh Rouse, to Yacht Rock, where AM Gold meets the breezy and casual grooves of lates 70’s, Laurel Canyon AOR. Those are all complimentary descriptors, tossing Josh Rouse’s tunes into some great company of that era; but this is now, and Rouse is right alongside the great, Indie singer-songwriters of 2022 with this easy rolling, loaded with effortless groove, release. It's all so casual. “Apple of My Eye” has island congas that kick the cut and record off with an Caribbean feel, strolling smoothly into “City Dog” where cool Hammond organ accents the lazy vibe. The slow and thick “She’s in LA” is stripped down and simple thanks to light percussion and slide guitar, a score for a lazy Southern California afternoon, and there’s a load of hipness within “The Lonely Postman”, calling for banging out a rhythm on your leg or snapping your fingers to its skip. The album closer in “Stick Around”, with its Bluesy guitar intro and horn punches, borrows acoustic grooves from J.J. Cale; it is wonderful. Mid-tempo melodies that float between Indie Folk and Bluesy, acoustic Rock without being straight-up Blues or Folk, Its all one big cool vibe.
