Jonathan Warren & The Billy Goats (from the album Gruff available as a self-release) (by Bryant Liggett)
Idaho based musicians Jonathan Warren & The Billy Goats named their latest, six-song release Gruff, referencing the struggle it was to complete this record. Health issues and other problems aside that nearly sidelined the project, it is also an apt name in reference to its sound. There’s the lazy shuffle of the opener “Guy Clark”, the guitar and banjo working together to produce a simple rhythm, each verse interspersed with a stabbing guitar solo. Jonathan Warren and The Billy Goats project super-sadness into “Crane My Neck” as they pine for a gal admitting ‘don’t know where she went, but I know she’s gone’. That sorrow carries over to “When You Go” where the star of that lonely melody is a drifting fiddle. An acoustic guitar and harmonica complete a trifecta of loneliness on “Pretty Sure” as Warren sings ‘I don’t believe you when you say you love me, and I don’t believe me when you say you don’t’. The album closes with a five-minute plus version of “Shady Grove” where The Billy Goats deliver gothic Folk over a subtle jam-band treatment. Rough around the edges acoustic Rock and gritty Folk-grass are apt descriptors, as this record is a dirty, front-porch picking party where over-production was kicked to the curb for a glorious sound.
