John Moreland (from the album Visitor available on Old Omens Records/Thirty Tigers) (by Danny McCloskey)
Returning to the acoustic soundtracking of his earlier solo recordings, John Moreland delivers his recent release, Visitor. While all his musical innovations are gems, the genre where he shines is Folk Rock. His deep vocal is the perfect driving wheel for his introspective stories and clear-eyed observations. Isolation silenced any voices other than the one John Moreland uses to tell his tales and he opens Visitor with first cut announcing “The Future is Coming Fast”. He sends out a hope that we can ‘walk the wire and keep our feet above the fire’ in the storyline, bordering the opener with the title track anchoring the exit on closing cut “Visitor”. A soft rhythm propels the slow-trudge groove that courses underneath “Gentle Violence” while a sway moving like a gentle breeze accompanies John Moreland when he asks “Will the Heavens Catch Us?”. Visitor makes requests with tough questions as it supplies one-liner takeaways to give listeners both answers and an experiential guidebook. The album claims “One Man Holds the World Hostage” as gentle finger-picking becomes the platform for “No Time” while “Ain’t Much I Can Do About It" utters a confession on a train-track beat. John Moreland is a wise man, proven as his words take aim and hit the heart and head simultaneously as he offers advice (“The More You Say, The Less It Means”), questions his love and loss in “Silver Silver”, and slides over a swampy groove inquiring ‘wonder why we do this” as he looks for his fallen angel in “Blue Dream Carolina”.
