Jeff Plankenhorn (from the album Alone At Sea

Jeff Plankenhorn (from the album Alone At Sea on Blue Corn Music) (by Lee Zimmerman)
Jeff Plankenhorn varies the moods, tones and tempos on his expressive new album Alone At Sea, while venturing without fear or inhibition into new sonic terrain. Produced by Colin Linden, a man who knows a little something about making music for all occasions, it brings out the best in an artist whose travels have left an indelible mark on his musical perspective. A slew of prestigious awards and nominations testify to his universality and his appeal, and now, seven years on from the release of his first solo album, Soulside, Plankenhorn — or Plank as he’s called for short — can claim the confidence and credibility to make an album that expresses the joy of solitude and celebration.
Nevertheless, the album offers something for everyone, from the Blues-infused opener “Bird Out On 9th”, and onward through the stoic sentiment of the title track, the boogie beat of “Maybe It’s Not Too Late”, and the sheer celebration of “Juggling Sand” and “Do A Little Dancing”, the latter of which encourages its listeners to…well… do exactly that. There’s a certain edge, quite naturally to “The Mess”, but that’s countered by the easy sway of “Blue Skies” and the insistent shuffle of “Flat Tire”.
Given that diversity, Plankenhorn isn’t easily pinned down in terms of style or content. Nevertheless, that’s to his credit, given the cookie cutter array of the competition that reigns at the top of the charts these days. The fact that Plankenhorn wrote all ten tracks and that he and Linden play the bulk of the instrumentation between them, further testifies to his talents. And lest there be any doubt about his ability to aim for a commercial connection, the tender romantic ballad “You’ll Stay” makes it clear he’s well qualified to offer up a potential radio-record hit.
Ultimately Alone At Sea is far from the solitary offering its title portends it to be. Hopefully then, it will bring him the widespread recognition and surround him with all the company he so decidedly deserves. (by Lee Zimmerman)
