Jason Isbell & the 400 Unit (from the album Weathervanes available on Southeatern Records/Thirty Tigers) (by Danny McCloskey)

Over the past decade, Jason Isbell has had major press print and fan love from both the Americana and NPR listeners for his one-two punch solo album releases, Southeastern (2013) and Something More Than Free (2015), solidifying his fame, releasing the full band album, The Nashville Sound (2017). Jason Isbell & The 400 Unit lay claim to the crown as the greatest Rock’n’Roll band on the planet, a title shared with former bandmates DBT, the two taking on the Rolling Stones/Beatles roles for Roots music. Following The 400 Unit releases Reunion and the Georgia Blue cover benefit album, the profile of the band has continued to rise, then rise again. Their recent release, Weathervanes, is in line with past achievements, raising up Jason Isbell as a top-shelf songwriter, and placing him as curator of the American Songbook alongside character driven songmen such as Bruce Springsteen, John Mellencamp, and Tom Petty.

The truth and the story are mash-up in the best Rock’n’Roll songs, and Weathervanes continues the tradition. Introducing a lover with a “Deathwish”, and setting the stage for the drama of the song as soundtracked by The 400 Unti. An edge builds in the opening of “Save the World” as the daily news becomes personal while a caffeinated patter carries “If You Insist” and an advice for an old friend fills in the storyline for “Cast Iron Skillet”. A solid backbeat steadies the hand on the wheel for “White Beretta” as Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit introduce “Strawberry Woman”, visit “Vestavia Hills”, recall “When We Were Close”, crown the “King of Oklahoma” ruler of bad choices, and exit Weathervanes on the assured trudge of “Miles”.
