Have Gun Will Travel (from the album Silver Sounds available on Matthew Burke Records) (by Bryant Liggett)
Any dictionary of musical definitions will position Have Gun Will Travel just to the right of the words Roots music. They drop Country music with subtle twang, Country Rock with bright jangle, and Punk Roots with an epic prog-rock edge, exploring the aforementioned on all their releases including their latest EP Silver Sounds.
Vocalist and guitar player Matt Burke’s cool croon kicks the EP off with a laid-back groover in “Buyer’s Remorse”. The tune is an opener that’s part 1970’s easy Rock, part early 60’s sounds that lives between Country and Pop. Horns give “Melancholy Moon (Everything Dies)” a nice R&B bounce, and HGWT offer a twang commitment to “Cardiology” thanks to some slick Country guitar that introduces the cut; the twang gives way to a big Pop hook as Burke sings of a broken heart, playing with the language of broken hearts to prove he’s ‘not broken hearted’.
Have Gun Will Travel present power chords for “Resist the Machines”, throw out a laid-back cut in “Our Fair City”, and close with “Dystopia”, a spaced-out track that is Prog Roots Rock. Have Gun Will Travel is a Rock band with a load of influences, including a singer-songwriter vibe with lyrics that dig beyond the personal. They’ve found not one sweet spot between a load of styles, but several and they live comfortably in each. (by Bryant Liggett)
