It’s a record that packs a lot of punch. Gwen Levey and her band The Breakdown get to the point on the quick on Not the Girl Next Door, tossing out Indie Rock, Blues, and heavy Roots with subtle twang like she’s giving away free candy to eager recipients. Levey and band show up, do the job, and split.
There’s the direct beat and handclaps of “Barefoot & Pregnant”, a bouncer with Levey’s tongue poking through the cheek, challenging anyone wanting to keep women in a decades old place; its smart while loaded with sarcasm and satire as she tosses around every old and outdated vision of women.
“Man for the Job” has a wonderful groove bordering on Rootsy Funk, while the Not the Girl Next Door title track kicks off with stabbing Indie Rock guitar via power chords before rolling into a confident, Outlaw Country Rock charger, and that Rock’n’Roll motif continues with “Toxic City”.
Music is rarely this efficient, with the music maker showing up, presenting the wares and gone as the last chord fades out…. and with an all start cast of Nashville session players who prove they can back a Country crooner, or be a Grunge and Punk inspired Rock band. Fortunately, they’re backing a singer who can play that, and many other musical roles.
