Gov’t Mule (from Peace…..Like a River on Gov’t Mule Inc / Fantasy Records / Concord) (by Bryant Liggett)
Come for the Southern Rock riffs, stay for the Southern Rock groove…. all courtesy of Warren Haynes and the trusty Gov’t Mule, his decades old, consistently crushing band. Their latest, Peace…Like a River, more hard-hitting Blues Rock that’s Folk-personal, with gritty, southern Soul, and even some elements of Prog Rock tossed about, just because they can pull it all off. Heavy balladeers, Gov’t Mule kick the record off with “Same as It Ever Was”, a cut loaded with subtle Haynes fills as they recruit Billy Gibbons for the Psychedelic Funk of “Shake Our Way Out”, a tune that gets guitar weird at solo time. The Kerhonkson Philharmonic backs the band on “Made My Peace”, “Your Only Friend” is a big ballad with Warren Haynes dropping a dramatic, David Gilmour (Pink Floyd) inspired guitar solo (the guy is loaded with dramatic solos) while “Dreaming Out Loud” is New Orleans funky, featuring guests Ivan Neville and Ruthie Foster. “Head Full of Thunder” is alive with Classic Rock riffage, full of wonderful co-accents between the keyboards and Warren Haynes in “After the Storm”. “Long Time Coming” is wah-wah funky with punchy horns. Peace…Like a River is the studio companion to their last record, Heavy Load Blues, recorded at the same time under the same roof but in different parts of the studio with different gear. Same band, different project, and testament to a workhorse of a band. It’s all one sound with subtle diversity, as they remain a fully-loaded Psychedelic Blues band is comfortable jamming. The proper description, however, is Rock band with a little bit of everything in their musical kitty.
