Good Lovelies (from We Will Never Be the Same available on Outside Music) (by Bryant Liggett)
The loudest instrument on the latest from Good Lovelies isn’t something you would stow away in a case, nor will it get lost by an airline while on tour, as the instrument emanates from within Kerri Ough, Sue Passmore, and Caroline Marie Brooks at all times. Their combined voices, crisp, clean and powerful when singular, angelic when together, set a steady and strong tone on their latest in We Will Never Be the Same, a mellow and laid-back offering that’s ready to set a positive, morning mood.
“Young at Heart” is an opener that’s lovely and pure, a breezy Pop cut that moves at a steady pace, referencing great songs on the radio and the excited anticipation of seeing live music, where you’ll ‘lose ourselves til’ the morning comes’. “Keep Moving” lyrically drives a positive vibe despite obstacles, the melody driven by a solid, percussive clap, while a cut like “All My Days” is Folk beauty via a tender love ballad. Slight keys give “Insomnia” a super-subtle Roots Gospel vibe, and the closer “Find Our Way Home” is a dramatic score.
Good Lovelies can live on vocals alone. The instruments remain a background presence, offering just enough support for the drifting vocals. The trios voices are strong enough to stand on their own, which they do, but together they are heavenly, coming together on the sly to create a vocal package of laid-back and dreamy Folk.
