Ellis Paul from the album 55 available on Rosella Records (by Lee Zimmerman)
Ellis Paul is a singular songwriter. That might seem like some sort of generalized characterization or perhaps even an over- zealous declaration. Yet those who are familiar with his work will likely understand the accuracy with which it’s assessed. Not only is he capable of capturing small truths and sharing them with unfettered expression, but he also possesses the means to convey those thoughts in such a way as to ensure they’re in sync with the feelings and sentiments stirred within us all. One song in particular, “When Angels Fall”, impacts in an especially emphatic way. ‘Are you gonna fight? Fight for your guns Or fight for your children?’ Given the horrors of the killings that have taken the lives of the innocent and unprotected, it rings with special resonance. Not every song hit as hard, but suffice it to say, there’s not a single one that doesn’t leave an indelible emotional imprint. Ellis Paul’s vocals — pointedly precise and with a seemingly effortless enunciation — bring the feelings to the fore. Yet at the same time, it’s the songs themselves with that convey feelings of calm and compassion. Each leaves an emphatic impression, be it the soothing sound of “Cosmos”, the soft and subtle echoes of “Who You Are”, the calming caress of “The Gift”, or the absolute ornate beauty imbued in “Holy”. The messages Ellis Paul delivers are gleaned from personal perspectives, and when he delves into fond nostalgia and serves up a series of retro references on the title track itself, there’s an obvious allure that makes the connection complete. Once again, the lyrics that accompany “Be the Fire” sum the sentiment up succinctly: ‘When it’s time to speak, speak with kindness When it’s time to laugh, laugh your wildest When it’s time to cry, cry to heal it When you make a promise, be the one that keeps it’ If only humanity would take heed. Sadly, it seems doubtful. Happily, though, we’re fortunate that Ellis Paul is here to remind us that the possibilities still remain. That in itself offers reason to rejoice.
