Eliza Gilkyson (from the album Home available on Realiza Records) (by Bryant Liggett)
Home is in the title, and the images of home are displayed all Eliza Gilkyson’s latest release, Home. It is a warm album about the joys of friends and family, recorded with friends and family. A post-pandemic coming out where Eliza Gilkyson sings of what’s important to her, common themes that should be important to us all. There’s the carefully plucked banjo to open Home with “True North,” Gilkyson laying out a future someone special as she sings ‘I only know my future lies where you and I will go’. The “World Keeps on Singing” is a driving song pushed by pedal steel guitar, its mood mellow while Eliza Gilkyson encouraging to drive straight on through the troubles. Those aforementioned friends who stop by the studio join in on “How Deep” and “Sparrow”, the former a duet with Robert Earl Keen, the latter with Mary Chapin Carpenter. Both are melancholic and stunning. There’s a cool, Blues strut walking across “Safety Zone” as Eliza adds blood relations via brother Tony Gilkyson (X, Lone Justice) with ambient Roots guitar for “Witness” while “Man in the Bottle” features hints of old tunes of her Dad, singer/songwriter Terry Gilkyson, as she’s joined on vocals by Van Dyke Parks. These are hushed cuts of inspiration, with Eliza Gilkyson dropping reminders of simple family importance via a quiet and melodic narrative.
