Driftwood (from the album December Last Call available as a self-release) (by Bryant Liggett)
Driftwood has found comfortable quarters via a sound of Indie Roots and Rock with Southern jangle. They certainly dance to their own sound, as there’s a laid-back Rock’n’Roll vibe that, at times, is driven by a meandering guitar of the Southern Rock influence. They could take off down a musical trail with the enthusiasm of an excited or poorly behaved dog, while also knowing exactly when to reel it in. The album opener is ripe for a front porch jam, with the album title track being a big, feel-good number. Southern Rock guitar punches the opening of “Every Which Way but Loose”, a driving make-up cut, while “Just a Kid” is a fun-paced bouncer. It’s catchy and snappy and begs you to play it again when the last note rings out. “Float Away” is a tune that finds the band starting the cut stripped down and scaled back before they sneak in from the behind, they do the dreamy Roots sound in “Continental Lincoln”, and that vibe continues into the “Up All Night Blues” with violinist Claire Byrne putting her wonderful and thick vocals on display. The closer in “Stardust” starts as a gentle Folk cut before turning into a free-floating score with the band stretching their musical legs, proving that have December Last Call has the chops for a stripped-down pick or exploratory jam.
