Drew Holcomb & The Neighbors, Johnnyswim

Drew Holcomb & The Neighbors, Johnnyswim (from Goodbye Road: Volume Two available on Goodbye Road Records) (by Lee Zimmerman)
Goodbye Road: Volume Two marks the second collaboration between Johnnyswim and Drew Holcomb & The Neighbors following Goodbye Road, the first EP they wrote and recorded in the wake of the violence in Charlottesville, the sudden and unexpected loss of Tom Petty, and the massacre of music fans at a festival in Las Vegas.
This follow-up effort finds specific resolve and reckoning inherent within the context of four songs, all written by Holcomb and Johnnyswim’s Abner Ramirez and Amanda Sudano, along with an occasional outside contribution. The sweet and soothing “Isn’t Everything a Love Song” radiates with resilience while “Sing It Out and “What Have We Got To Lose” share a decided drive and determination. They cap it all off with a tender take on Stephen Foster’s American classic “Hard Times (Come Again No More)”, a purposeful prayer that provides the hope that society can eventually overcome the troubles and travails of a decidedly difficult time.

According to the artists themselves, these songs were written to assuage the uncertainties, unhappiness, and pure pessimism that have accompanied these troubling times. Happily, they accomplish that mission, and offer an optimism that’s clearly needed now more than ever. That’s hardly surprising, given that each of these ensembles are known for their creativity, compassion and unblemished honesty.
Ultimately, the emotion and expression shared here suggest that quantity has little to do with quality. Whether more collaborations will be forthcoming remains to be seen, but at any rate, it’s clear that this Goodbye Road Vol. 2 can, in fact, lead to a hopeful horizon. (by Lee Zimmerman)
